Got the new VQ extractor, and a replacement factory spring and plunger. Looks good but doesn’t fit – turns out that whatever caused the old extractor to get blown out left a burr and a tiny crack in the bolt face. Sigh.
I filed down the burr with a needle file but there is still a tiny crack in the face where the extractor lies. I don’t think it’s crucial…
It won’t affect the shooting or safety – worse that happens is the extractor gives me more problems, in which case it’s back to Ruger! For now, it all fits and runs fine now. I got one FTF in a hundred rounds, but I think that’s because of the cheap bulk ammo I bought, nothing to do with the extractor.
Tonight though, I installed a Weaver rail and my new UltraDot. Unfortunately, no vise or gunrest. No boresight either for that matter. But the cool thing about the Ruger is that once you’ve removed the bolt you can see straight down the receiver and barrel. Now all you need is one of those little laser cat torturing devices. If you aim the laser down the barrel you can get the reflex sight (hopefully) close to dialed-in. Will know better tomorrow!
I also picked up a VQ trigger kit, but I think I’ll stick with making one modification at a time. Besides, have to have something to look forward to!
